Now, it’s India time

Posted on: 8 giugno 2009

the-colors-of-the-world-7This year, which movie is the most eye-catching? There is no doubt that it was the Oscar Winner – Slumdog Millionaire. Because of this movie, let the whole world pay attention to that ancient, mysterious land – INDIA.

Before we begin to talk about the Indian fashion, why not imitate the classic clips of the movie let’s do a multiple-choice question: the reason of India Fashion is so hot?

A. India’s unique customs;

B. people’s aesthetic changing;

C. the result of globalization;

D. destiny

I believe your answer like Jamal, is D – destiny.

India Fashion swept the world, is the result of destiny. India, India, now everyone is talking about India, the whole world is falling in love with India. February 19, 2009, in New York fashion week, Ports 1961’s 09 Autumn/Winter collection was amazing. Achkan evolved long coat, Angarkha short jacket, and tight T-shirt Choga; geometry printing with the metal silk lace, traditional embroidery technique – Zardozi, Gold-plated jacquard, woven tapestries, Jaali filigree lace…The sister designers Tia & Fiona Cibani gave us a gorgeous “Mughal Dynasty”. port 1961 02port 1961 01

More than this, in 2008, Hermès launched the Indian style bags and “Beloved India” scarves; in its spring/summer collection, Jean Paul Gaultier used sarees to create details, in the show, the color of background used spice colors. Hermes的“挚爱印度”丝巾,将对印度的浓情爱意描绘在了一方丝巾之上2hermes-ss2008-handbagHermès2008Cartier’s “mysterious India” jewelry, condensed the essence of Indian culture and the gorgeous exotic design. Cartier 的高级珠宝系列,将印度的迷情挪移到珠宝上,每一个细节都向印度致敬Lancôme’s 2008 autumn and winter make-up series, French designer Alexis Mabille inspired from lotus, to create a masterpiece in this series – Lotus Splendor eyeshallow; and Sunny Manorama pounder reappeared the image of the lucky elephant.In 2007, Givenchy created a perfume – AMARIGE, they found the area Tamil Nadu of India has abnormal low-temperature and relative humidity, in the harvest season, extracted the rare mimosa oils, it smells more light, fresh. LancômeEven early in 1925, Jacques Guerlain inspired the legend about the ancient Indian dynasty Mogul’s emperor Jahan Shah and his queen Muntaz Mahal, to create a perfume: Shalimar.Givenchy 2007 AMARIGE

Those are famous brands, we have to come back to India, look around the real Indian-design. I think there are some reasons can explain why Indian fashion is developing so well and so rapidly. This country has a rich and varied textile heritage, where each region of India has its own unique native costume and traditional attire. While traditional clothes are still worn in most of rural India, urban India is changing rapidly, with international fashion trends reflected by the young and glamorous, in the cosmopolitan metros of India. Fashion in India is a vibrant scene, a nascent industry and a colorful and glamorous world where designers and models start new trends every day.

Today, New Delhi and Mumbai are the most important cities in India, every year, Lakmè Fashion Week has became a good platform to make the Indian fashion industry go to the international market, attracted more and more international buyers to attend this event. We can see that India Fashion Week has owned all the top Fashion Week’s elements: gifted designers, trends, exaggerated, bizarre, exciting, stars… Now, the most toppest Indian designers included Rohit Bal、Tarun Tahiliani、Ashish Soni、Rohit Gandhi、Rahul Khanna、Rina Dhaka、Manish Arora、Ritu Kumar. Indian designer’s vision not only remain in India, they have been aimed at the heart of the world fashion center, like Paris, Milan, London, New Yorker.

The little actors of “Slumdog Millionaire” perfomance for designer Ashima Leena at 2009 fashion week

:《貧民窟裏的百萬富翁》中的小演員助陣09印度時裝周Ashima Leena專場Here, I have to introduce a talent Indian designer – Manish Arora, who is regarded by many as “the John Galliano of India”, by the way, I strongly suggest you go to see his website, it’s really wonderful and funny, specially the flash – Manish Arora & Fish. His design is adventurous and creative, he does very well between traditional Indian-style and modern pop art, formed his own unique style. He is the first qualified Indian designer to participate the Paris Fashion Week last year. I think he was noticed by the world must be at London Fashion Week in 2007, his first appearance in top show was already extremely surprised. From that year, he has collaborated with Reebok; with Swatch for a limited edition of watches; 2008, collaborated with M.A.C. . So now, Swatch launched the new spring/summer collection, we can see this Indian fashion designer’s new creation – combines high-contrast colors and intriguing shapes with Bollywood sparkle, pop culture, humour and sheer cheerful life to create an exuberant collection of fashionable accessories for the wrist.

swatchIn my opinion, the whole fashion industry is like a chain, the development of the fashion design is inseparable from the movies and stars. We all know Hollywood in USA, so we shouldn’t be ignored Bollywood in India. Last year, the Bollywood’s movie “Fashion” has raised some waves for a while. This movie explores the world of style through the emotional personal journeys, show the industry – the dream-weavers of that elaborate world of glamour: the models, designers, photographers, businessmen, agencies etc. It was not a perfect -produced movie, but obviously no matter the actors, clothes, and the posters, it was already a huge progress. fashion3

Others Bollywood movies and stars

11shilpa-miss_bollywoodWe don’t forget the important role in the fashion design – models. As we know, the victories of a number of Indian beauty queens in International events such as the Miss World and Miss Universe contests have also made Indian models recognized worldwide. Look around, we can find this years, the Indian models are “hotting”. Indian model Lakshmi Menon showed on the cover of “Dazed & Confused” Magazine April issue; in the same time, she is the Prolocutor for Givenchy, also is the Prolocutor for Max Mara with Eniko Mihalik. And the fresh Indian supermodel Kangana Dutta showed on the cover of English Magazine “TANK”. When Giorgio Armani accepted the interview of Vman magazine, he said:“My collection was inspired by modern India and its vibrant colors. It features a delicate color palette with brighter oriental tones, interpreted in my signature style.”

armani1-600x580Fashion in India is also beginning to make its mark on the international scene as accessories such as bindis (red dots worn on the forehead), mehendi (designs made by applying henna to the palms of the hands and other parts of the body) and bangles, have gained international popularity, after being worn by fashion icons like the pop singers Madonna and Gwen Stephani. For example, as early as in 1999, Madonna played Indian elements in her MTV “Frozen”, she not just integrated the Indian musical elements, Indian dance and yoga hand movements; the most remarkable is that her hands painted the traditional Indian painting – Henna.

hennaYoga, sarees, colorful turbans, symbolic totems, spices… so many wonderful things, this ancient oriental country is full of new vitality. Now, it is India time!

There are some mistakes but I like the style.
Good post!

Great intro and good post.
Maybe it would have been better with more little brands and not-so-known brands and artists!
